Comment: Well I've been trying to get my stupid computer at work to play Round Here, but its a piece of shit and all I cn hear is the intro.(Its not nice to tease people like that!:)
But the good news is, is that I discovered that I can buy it for only $12, which is great for people like me. I guess I can deal with the waiting process, even though I am impatient as hell. So I guess I'll wind this down, and say thanks so much for making you CD avaiable. And I am so excited to get it.

Comment: ...Round Here by the Himalayans; which eventually split to become Counting Crows.

The song has haunted me ever since I first heard it in late 2002. It's Round Here...but full of anger, energy and defiance at the world, instead of the melancholy and seemingly reflective acceptance in August & Everything After.

It makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up so that I want to cry and dance at the same time.

Excellent.

Comment: Becca, the CD has been available for over ten years which is hard to believe. I starting making it available thinking it would be a short term thing until interest died out but interest has only increased. The whole thing was an effort on my part to make sure this music and these lyrics which I thought were valuable were not lost. At first our website was just a branch off of a friend's law site believe it or not. It had the non-glamorous address of cstier00@counsel.com! Yes, we have come a little way since then. Also, all we offered was a cassette tape (this was before CDs became available to the general public) with photocopied art and it wasn't mixed as well as it is now. As technology changed so did we and it enabled us to take this thing worldwide in a way we never could have imagined back then. The only thing that has remained stuck in the '90s is the price because this is about getting this music out and not about profit which is good because that goes to the E-Bay bootleggers not us! Anyway, the fact that you all are out there makes it worth it. I mean how cool is it that we have fans like Grey (Sept. 29) who were probably watching Sesame Street when the Himalayans were playing!

Comment: NEW ADMINISTRATOR

Sophie Cheesemna is a Counting Crows and Himalayans fan that is very passionate about all aspects of music. She enjoys listening to and reading about all forms of music in an effort to learn more about the subject. Sophie also enjoys films and is a huge Kevin Spacey fan. Currently living in England, she is soon moving to London to study History and English Literature at the university level.

Like many Crows/Himalayans fans, Sophie enjoys asking questions about the bands and communicating with others who enjoy quality music and lyrics and can do so with intelligence and humor. She was also clever enough to help expand this simple questbook into a much more useful forum and it is for this reason that she is on your supreme commander and leader of the known universe... oh sorry, wrong speech, no but she is being granted the honorary title of administrator. In this role she will help facilitate discussions and help direct questions to me when needed. Sophie starts this week as soon as she returns from Tibet where she is learning the finer points of Yak handling and feeding. It is our wish to give something back to all the great and loyal Himalayan fans, to allow the fans to have input on the site and to offer a place for discussion and crosstalk about all things musical.

Comment: Mark, You know there is always going to be the "teeny-bopper" factor and I think every group has some of that but I have to defend Crows fans here a little. You know I have been doing this website and interacting with Crows fans who also like the Himalayans for many years now and I have to say they have proven to be an amazing group of people. Like me, I think a huge part of their interest in rock is in the lyrics as much as the music... I could never deal with a band that had nothing to say to me in the lyrics. This is a huge point, from the very first time Adam sang with us up until now I have been always blown away by the content, intelligence and depth of the lyrics and the quality has never wavered. Crows fans have always seemed very intelligent to me and what's more, they have been so kind and accepting of the Himalayans. They could just have easily not liked it or dismissed the music but they have embraced it and, frankly, helped sustain me in my effort (and it has not been easy to do) to keep the Himalayans going by showing interest and a genuine love of our music as well, which is different than the Crows. In one case, fans helped me totally redesign my website just because they loved the band and wanted to see it better represented on-line. This is a good question but this is how it seems to me, the crowds you see in the videos are our friends and the fans we gathered in our two years of playing live. Unfortunately, we never had the broader exposure to see what kind of fans the Himalayans would attract but it would have been cool to find out. For now, I'm pretty happy with the gang we have. I know one thing that is interesting, somehow this music we made here in the Bay Area has been purchased in almost every country you can think of... amazing that it can have such appeal!

Comment: Dan. Do you think that the Himalayans would have the same type of fan base as Counting Crows currently has, had they stayed together. I checked out the message board on counting crows' web-site and I swear half of the people posting on there sound like they are psychotic teeny boppers who really should get a life of their own. Its rather humorous to see how they hang on Adam's every word. In the videos on this website of your concerts, it seems like a much cooler, older crowd who are there because they dig your music rather than to see Adam's dreadlocks. Any thoughs?

Comment: As explained a little bit below, "Angels in America" and "Save My Life" are literally unfinished works. Both were developed at about the same time from my guitar lines and flushed out by the band in "jam" mode. They were really headed in a cool direction and seemed to come together very quickly which is good because I don't think we played them more than a few times TOTAL. We were getting real quick and effective at working together musically so what you hear is an example of the Himalayans song-writing process of that period frozen in time, literally; the band stopped playing before these could be finished! I haven't published lyrics because there really isn't a finished concept and it is an example of how Adam developed a lyric and melody idea simultaneously, in this case, as we were still developing the tune. In some cases there are chunks of what might have one day been a finished line but in others Adam blurs the words as he searches for what he wants. I think it's a fascinating look at the process because you can get a real idea of what is to come but all the details are not yet there. If anyone wants they can try and see if they can get the words, I couldn't do it because I think some just aren't there, they are like verbal place holders that suggest a word but may not yet be a totally clear concept. Regardless, I included these because they came around this fast after only a few times of play and I felt they were both going to be very cool songs (they both needed musical breaks). I did take the liberty of choosing the names however, I felt enough of a direction had been chiseled out and the names popped into my head automatically so I trusted my instinct.

Comment: Okay, let me answer this in a couple of ways... first of all if the Himalayans kept playing there would be a lot of difference from the following point of view: I think our maturity and song writing skill would cause the songs to be a little tighter and shorter and full of some other tricks that I am aware of now but wasn't then. That was a complaint Bryson had when he recorded us, that the songs were too long and a little cumbersome. I agree and did then but it is not smart to make those changes in the studio and I didn't exactly know how. Since that time my ear has really developed and refined to the point where I have been asked to help other bands trim and improve their songs and I'm really good at it… I just "see it" now in a way I didn't before. Inexperience in song writing forces bands into things to make the whole song work that you kind of know is cumbersome at the time but you don't know any other way to get from section to section. Also, as you are developing this skill you want to include everything that sounds good and works and you don't have the discipline to edit yourself and drop a part that isn't needed. The other thing is that some elements of the Himalayans as they sounded then were reflections of the time and location were we played. For example, a lot of local bands had that little of "funk" in their sound that I think we would have grown out of. What's more, I think we actually stopped playing right as we hit our stride and our best and most challenging stuff was right around the corner. It took us a while to integrate Marty (on bass) and move Dave from bass to guitar. The extra guitar added a lot to our sound but it took us a while to learn how to use it. We were really getting good at playing together and our last show was just the best thing I had ever been a part of. "Angels in America" and "Save My Life" were actually new songs in development and we just threw down what we had and Adam just vamped over them, but a new complexity to our sound was about to emerge!

As for the Crows vs Himalayans, I think they are extremely different bands and our roles and the way we worked with Adam were totally different. Rather than a song being built around an idea that Adam had for a vocal or lyric, we came in with finished material (basically) and, at that point, Adam would start working and begin to fit a melody and lyric idea to it. They are almost exact opposites in terms of how to approach song writing. Another thing I liked was that Adam choose lyric topics relating to experiences we had all had up to that point in time which included childhood issues and others... in the Crows he writes more about his experience in life from the point of when the Crows began to take off and after - so it's a different perspective.

Finally, in terms of my comment on the bass player not wanting to be famous I actually wasn't referring to Marty at all but to Dave (when he first joined and played bass with us). Unlike (I think) Adam and myself (if I can speak for us both), Dave was just a great and confident guy who didn't need the headache of taking the band to the next level. I felt that I could identify with Adam in that I think we both felt that it would be a great thing to do and that it would be nice to prove everyone wrong who always thought it was impossible. I know Adam and I both loved playing live the most and always focused on what went "right" after a live show rather than what went "wrong."

Comment: Thanks for the thoughtful response Dan. Im also curious how you think the sound of the Himalayans would compare to that of Counting Crows had you continued to play together. Obviously the make-up of the bands is very different, but it seems that there is some overlapping of friends abd members of the two different bands. Also, did you purposely make the comment about your bassist, Marty Jones, not wanting to be famous because of "Mr.Jones"?

Comment: Hey guys! Good question Mark: here is my exclamation. Let me say this: I have a friend who runs around always saying he helped Third Eye Blind write some of the songs from their huge debut album. I know he played with them and he probably did, but he never got credit and it really screwed him up knowing that he contributed to something that made such a splash and had nothing to show for it.

The other guys in the Himalayans weren't always as sure about it but I knew we had something special that could really make an impact. I can't tell you what it is like knowing that you've created something that somehow transcends the whole of parts and becomes it's own living and breathing art and to do it in such an unstable medium as rock-n-roll. You finally get all the people and personalities and they fit like they were fated to do so and still, you have to convince your band and your friends and your family and the public and the industry that this is the one in a million band. No one in my family played music and my parents thought I was crazy... our manager worked against us and used our success to promote his other band whose members were childhood friends, our bass player didn't want to be famous, we put all our money back into hiring sound persons for our gigs and we suffered a major theft of our equipment which almost stopped us.

It was tough and I always felt like if I breathed too hard, this band would dissolve. But if you could have heard us live! We never got a proper recording and, if you've heard the story, it took a major coup on my part to even get the session that became most of "She Likes the Weather."

So it never made it to a point where we could have really seen what the band could do on a bigger level but the fact that the CD still sells world-wide 10 years later should be some indication. The dream never made it towards where I wanted, but the next best thing happened; and that is that we contributed and wrote and got credit for a hit song on a breakthrough album at the end of the millennia. Pretty cool!

Adam was totally great about how he told us what was going on and he always made sure we got proper credit. He still tries to mention us and throw us plug whenever he can (True Spin) even though it may end up on the cutting room floor! I've been in many bands and I can tell you that no matter how hard you try you can't "make" a great band happen, nobody has ever been able to quantify that it, it just transcends with the right combination of people and falls short if you remove even one personality! As a result, all the Himalayans are still great friends to this day and always will be. I don't see Adam or the others as much, but when I do it is like we were just in the studio the day before. It's a great thing and I'm so thankful to have been a part of it for two years of live playing and am so glad that our music is still out there and appreciated because that is really what the dream always was!

Comment: Dan,not to seem obtrusive, but I'm curious if there is/was any animosity between the Himalayans and Adam when he decided to leave the band. Also, during the radio interview clips on "She Like the Weather" it seems as if Adam assumes the position as spokesperson for the band. How did the relative newcomer to the band taking this role fly with you and the rest of the guys?

Comment: VH1 contacted me and wanted to use video and photos of the Himalayans but we had trouble getting everything cleared in time and didn't make the deadline. I assumed that they would still leave in the part where Adam discusses the Himalayans and the early days but I guess we made it onto the cutting room floor. Sorry for the false alarm, although your Mr. Jones knowledge should be enhanced. For now the Himalayans remain where any good treasure should be, hard to find.

Comment: Hey guys 7/15/04 is the VH1 airing and it is a show called "True Spin" featuring the stories behind the songs. In it Adam will talk about the Himalayans and the early days! Jon, we are seriously on the ball with CDs and sometimes get them to people before they even order them (anyone see Minority Report)... never takes more than a few days and usually less. The Himalayans are not playing anymore because once you've had a band like that doing it on a lower level (without Adam) would just not feel right.

Comment: hi, never been to this site before, didn't know Adam was in another band before, VERY cool. I'm seeing counting crows tomorrow and had to look stuff up. They're one of my favorite bands ever and as soon as my cd comes in the mail that I'm ordering, Himalayans will probably be too.

Comment: Sophie, I met my comment as a thank you for a getting a discussion going, actually along the lines of what Chris is talking about... a forum or message system is really what I have always wanted here at Himalayans HQ. Hey I am working on getting the other guys in the band to participate more and to establish routes for you guys to talk to them about Himalayans issues! Also, look for us to be discussed a lot by Adam soon in an upcoming VH1 special!
